Dr. Benjamin Anyanwu is the Executive Medical Director of Regions Healthcare, Hospitals, and Specialist Clinics, Owerri, Nigeria. He is triple board-certified in General Neurology, Vascular Neurology, and Neurocritical Care. He has served on several boards both as a member and chairman on several occasions.

He received his medical education at the University of Nigeria in 1993. After completing his internship and National Youth Service at the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital Kaduna, he proceeded to the Caribbean Island of Trinidad and Tobago, where he worked as a Registrar in Neurosurgery and Urology at the San Fernando General Hospital. He then joined St. George’s School of Medicine in Grenada as a Clinical Instructor in Neuroanatomy and Cell Biology.

He subsequently moved to the United States, where he underwent residency training in Neurology at Seton Hall University-JFK Medical Center in Edison, NJ, and received fellowship training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, in Neurocritical Care and Vascular Neurology.
Dr. Anyanwu moved to Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC, as a clinical attending/consultant. During his tenure, he served as the Medical Director of the Comprehensive Stroke and Cerebrovascular Medicine Program and the Neurocritical Care Unit Medical Director. In 2012, he was appointed Chairman of Neurosciences (Neurology and Neurosurgery) at Novant Health, NC.

Under his leadership, the Novant Health Stroke Program received its comprehensive stroke program award and several accolades, including the multi-year “Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.” Dr. Anyanwu was instrumental in developing several cutting-edge stroke intervention programs and the Telestroke program, which is now available in several states across America.

After several years of clinical and administrative leadership, he moved back to Nigeria in 2018 and established the Regions Healthcare System – Regions Healthcare, Hospitals, and Specialist Clinics in Imo state. Regions Healthcare offers various services in stroke care, epilepsy, neurosurgery, neurorehabilitation, vascular and cardiovascular (open-heart surgery), nephrology, cardiology, critical care, orthopedics (knee and hip replacement surgery), etc.

Through his leadership and collaborations, Dr. Anyanwu has also established a TeleNeuro-TeleStroke consultation program – Regions Stroke Alert, which offers neurological and stroke consultations to hospitals across Nigeria through telemedicine. This program has delivered state-of-the-art stroke interventions such as thrombolytic administrations and Neurological ICU care in its partner hospitals. In June 2024, Dr. Anyanwu received a Special Recognition Award for his stroke management and neurosciences excellence.
Dr. Anyanwu has over 30 years of experience as a medical professional and business leader. He is a national leader in stroke care in the United States and Nigeria. He is a global health expert, philanthropist, community leader, and an accomplished healthcare administrator.
